It's Only Hair

Today we made one more step towards independence -- I'm excited! It's a tiny step in the grand scheme of life, but may be a big one in the long run.

I woke up this morning and realized that my husband's hair is absolutely shabby. It was time for a haircut. Shaune refuses (with my complete understanding) to not go to a Great-Clips type place or the beauty school... only an authentic barber shop will do. Unfortunately, all the local barber shops charge between $14 and $18 a cut before tip. That doesn't fit into our budget the every 3 weeks or so that he needs it. Usually we stretch it to 5 or 6 weeks, but the trade off is dramatic (he looks much older when it's long).

I decided to take the somewhat scary step of taking responsibility for my husband's hair. I found a well-rated hair cutting kit for the same price as one haircut and gave it a whirl.

Although I probably need some more practice (and confidence), it turned out very well. Now, I have the freedom to trim him as often as he needs, without worrying about money or the barber shop's schedule. It's a small step, but a rewarding one.

And, if I mess up, it's only hair. It'll grow back next week!

Hooray! Congrats! :) David started letting me cut his hair a few months ago. It grows terribly fast (I wish mine grew as fast!) and although our barber shop here is a bit cheaper than yours ($9, plus tip) it adds up. I was scared to death when I tried the first time but it didn't come out too bad and now I love cutting his hair. He thinks it is more "authentic" too since I just use a good sharp pair of hair scissors. :)

What kit did you get? I'm looking into getting one for the little boys hair. I have no idea even where to start looking!

Congratulations! That's a big step to take. I'd been cutting girl's hair for years before I got married but I was always afraid of male haircuts. I learned, though, and kept my husband's hair with a scissors and comb. He recently bought me a set of clippers with all the different length attachments. It scared me greatly at first, but my first try produced such good results I am now anticipating when I can cut it again.

Congratulations Jenny, that's a big step. I have electric trimmers that I like (we call it the hair mower) since I really shave the boys short in the summer and let it grow longer in the winter. Good for you on your journey toward independence!

Wow, good for you! My husband lost his favorite "stylist" a couple of years ago, since she moved to another salon, and I've been responsible for haircuts since then. It still stresses me out, since I don't want to mess it up. I just use good hair scissors now, but I've been thinking about investing in some sort of clipper kit- what kind did you buy?

I bought a $10 kit at Wal-Mart, it's a ConAir. It has 4 comb attachments; I used the shortest on the back and one of the longer ones on the top. It was so easy!

Check at Wal-Mart or a similar store. There was a whole shelf of them and I just grabbed the cheapest. It works fine.
